Share Your World – May 02, 2017

Would you rather live where it is always hot or always cold? If I had to choose between extremes, I’d rather live where it’s always hot. But we live in Los Angeles, where we have a desert climate, which means it’s mostly hot/warm all year long, but nights are usually cool and humidity is low. To me, that’s perfect. No snow to worry about, no shoveling, no frigid weather to deal with. Here we just worry about wildfires and earthquakes. By the way we just had a shallow 3.0 magnitude earthquake here in Santa Monica about 2 hours ago. Just a big jolt and a bang. So far, no aftershocks…

Do you prefer long hair or short hair for yourself? Definitely not short. Have had it and wasn’t happy. These days I like a longish but not too long hair, in a modern bob.

What is your favorite month of the year? When I lived in Washington, D.C., October was my favorite month. That’s when autumn hits the region, the trees start changing colors, the air is cool and delightful. Here in L.A. months are very similar but autumn months are also nicer. So, I guess I’ll stick with October, which is also my birth month. 🙂

What is the easiest way for you to learn something new? By reading, by seeing and doing, in a classroom? I am definitely a visual learner. I also learn from listening to interesting lectures and conversations. I have no patience for reading instructions, for example, which gets me in trouble sometimes.  So I guess I can say I learn better by seeing and doing.

Optional Bonus question: What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up? I’m grateful that last week, Kaya, our family dog (she is really our daughter’s but we think she is ours), recovered quickly from an injury she suffered (we don’t know how it happened) that left her unable to climb stairs and with difficulty running. She was very depressed… Some acupuncture and muscle relaxants helped her recover quickly. And for next week, I’m looking forward to visiting beautiful San Francisco! We’ll spend the whole week there, starting this coming Sunday and returning the following Saturday. I’m very excited about that!

Doggie acupuncture…

Cee asks us to Share our World, so here we go…

Do you sleep with your closet doors open or closed? I keep them closed these days. It’s a walk-in closet and I used to keep it open until I heard weird noises coming from that direction one night and couldn’t sleep until sunrise. There’s nothing there, I’ve been assured. It was probably just some nocturnal animal trying to dig a tunnel to the house in the area. Never heard anything again, but the doors get closed every night.

Do you take the shampoos and conditioner bottles from hotel? No. I travel with my own shampoo and conditioner because my hair is such a snob… But I do take bad iPhone pictures when I come across some exotic hotel stuff, like the chocolate-based shampoo and bath products in Salzburg, and the beer-based ones in Munich. 😀

What is your usual bedtime? Oh, gawd… I’m an incorrigible night owl. I can go as late as 2:00am.

Do you like to use post-it notes? No, never have and I guess I never will…

When was the last time you wrote a letter to someone on paper? Ages ago. I don’t think I could handwrite an entire letter without going mad. My handwriting has deteriorated so much, I wonder how much longer I’ll be able the sign my whole name…

Any phobias? I am slightly claustrophobic. If I think for a second that a door won’t open, my heart starts racing. But I don’t think I would be out of my mind if stuck somewhere, unless it became clear I was stuck for the night say in an elevator, or bathroom stall… 🙂

How tall are you? I think I’m still 5’4″ but who knows? I think I’m still growing…

Optional Bonus question: What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up? I am grateful that our family dog, the adorable Kaya, recovered well from a gastrointestinal infection that lasted quite a few days and had us all quite worried. Unfortunately, all I have to look forward to is a lot of aggravation, as the 45th president of the United States is inaugurated this Friday, starting what promises to be the craziest, nastiest, weirdest four years in human history.

Cee’s Share Your World – 2016 Week 26

London

I’ve never taken the time to participate in Cee’s Share Your World, mostly because I am always rushing through posts and this one requires you to stop, and think, and write… So here’s my first, and hopefully not last, contribution.

What’s your most memorable (good or bad) airplane flight? Definitely, my most memorable airplane flight was going from New York to London on the Concord. I had always dreamed of making that famous short trip across the Atlantic and my dream finally came true in 2000. We celebrated our anniversary flying the British Airways Concord to spend the weekend in London. In spite of all the hoopla, the Concorde not very luxurious. The seats, while comfortable, were not as plush as most first-class seats in regular planes, but the food and the service were superb. And, of course, there was the excitement of moving twice the speed of sound: about 1,500 miles per hour, compared with 485 miles per hour on a commercial 737. Wow! Right? Quite a thrill there. Besides that, the crew really made you feel special. It was part of the Concorde folklore to make you have a great experience. They pampered you with all they could. We also got beautiful gifts, including elegant leather pieces, and a Wedgwood paperweight with Concorde illustrations (see photo below). I still have and use them. But the real treat was the fact that in 3 hours we were landing in London and ready to enjoy the city. Unfortunately, that same year, Air France’s Concorde crashed outside Paris, killing 113 people and from that point on things went downhill for the Concorde. On top of all the bad publicity about “mechanical flaws”, 9/11 caused ticket sales to plunge. With fewer people flying, it became very expensive to maintain the fleets. British Airways and Air France announced the end of the Concorde flights in 2003. I still mourn that loss… 😦Concorde-IMG_1429_edited-1

How many bones, if any, have you broken? None whatsoever, although I’ve had all sorts of minor injuries in my life…

If you had your own talk show, who would your first three guests be? (guest can be dead, alive, famous or someone you just know). My first guest would definitely be Barack Obama and we would only talk about cool stuff because he is a cool cat. Yes, I am a huge fan… 🙂 The second guest would be the legendary photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson, if I could bring him back to life. We would talk about his memorable work capturing all those incredible decisive moments. The third would probably be another photographer, Vivian Maier, who worked for forty years as a nanny, while secretly building a portfolio of some 150,000 photographs of the people and architecture of New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Her work was found in 2007, two years before she died, when her negatives, prints, audio recordings, and 8 mm films were auctioned because she was ill and broke and stopped paying for their storage. That’s how the brilliant street photography of Vivian Maier was revealed to the world. I am intrigued by her decision to keep her extraordinary gift a secret and would like to hear her reasons.

Make a Currently List: What are you reading, watching, listening to, eating, needing, wanting, and missing right now? Reading: I’ve just begun reading “Numero Zero” Umberto Eco’s last novel, published just months before he died. Watching: I’m binge-watching “The Americans” and watching a three-part series on the Life of Napoleon Bonaparte; Listening: I am a classic rock lover but am very open to other genres. Currently I’m a bit obsessed with the music of Andra Day and Chris Stapleton (I know, such different genres…), and keep going back to them all the time. Eating: Not much. I’m in the middle of a “cleanse” which means eliminating all “toxic food” (i.e.,  delicious food) from my diet for 21 days. I have one more week to go. Needing: Nothing that I can think of. Wanting: to take another photography class to step up my skills. Missing: delicious, decadent meals…!!! 🙂

Bonus question: What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up? I am grateful that last week was uneventful and that I got to take nice early evening walks along my favorite place, Palisades Park, in Santa Monica. This week I’m looking forward to throughly cleaning up and adding new plants to our garden and backyard, with the help of the landscaping team of John, Carlos, and Antonio, because my husband and I are terrible gardeners…
