365/Day 130

Honoring Chris Burden (4/11/1946 – 5/10/2015) ~~

If you’ve ever visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), you’ve seen “Urban Light,” Chris Burden’s installation in the form of a classical Greek temple composed of 202 antique cast-iron street lamps. This permanent installation has been at LACMA since 2008 and is now one of the symbols of Los Angeles. I fell in love with “Urban Light” the first time I set eyes on it. No matter which angle you look at it you’ll discover something new and beautiful, not only in the lamps themselves but in the way they are displayed. So, so pretty…

Today we woke up to news that Chris Burden had died. He was only 69 and would’ve had so much more to give to the art world had he not lost his battle with cancer. I am honoring him with some of the photos I’ve taken of his wonderful “Urban Light.”

Weekly Photo Challenge: Forces of Nature

For this week’s photo challenge, Forces of Nature, I’m sharing photos of my last snow storm in the Washington D.C. area before moving to Los Angeles. The snow was a force to be reckoned with! Left us without power for several days; roads were a mess; the Federal Government closed for a week, as did everything else. We had to go to a hotel for a few days to be safe. All this because the D.C. metro area is totally unprepared to handle snow. Just as Los Angeles can’t handle rain!! 🙂

365/Day 125

Riding El Camino Real~~

Today’s post is about the trip back home on a very overcast day, and the photos were taken from the car. Coming home from Santa Barbara this afternoon we drove through part of California’s historic El Camino Real (the Royal Road). This refers to the 600-mile (966-kilometer) California Mission Trail, connecting the former Alta California’s 21 missions, stretching from Mission San Diego de Alcalá in San Diego in the south to Mission San Francisco Solano in Sonoma in the north. The Camino Real today includes portions of U.S. Route 101, California State Route 1, California State Route 82 in the San Francisco Bay Area, and San Diego County Route S11. A nice reminder that you are in the Camino Real is that in its entire extent you’ll see distinctive bells, hung on supports in the form of a shepherd’s crook, also described as “a Franciscan walking stick.” As you can see, I’m a real sucker for these things… 🙂
