Santa Monica Daredevil
Twice in the past weeks, I happened to catch this man doing some pretty risky stunts at Palisades Park, in Santa Monica. Both times he was running, doing handstands and other tricks on top of the narrow concrete wall above the Santa Monica bluffs. Below, on one side of him, was the Pacific Coast Highway. One false step and he would almost certainly fall onto the highway traffic and possibly die. On the other side, a less threatening but busy ramp where cars coming from the PCH exit to Santa Monica. I don’t know for sure but I suspect it’s illegal to do this… Yet, he keeps coming back. Until the next time, here are two slideshows from the two days I caught his act. Some friends suspect I’ve become a groupie of the unknown stuntman, but it was really a coincidence. 🙂
The latest, on February 6.
The first time, on January 21

We Meet Again!
Three weeks ago, I came across a guy performing some very risky stunts near Palisades Park in Santa Monica, including running on top of the narrow concrete railing along the ramp just above the Pacific Coast Highway. I took a series of impromptu shots of him then. Today, much to my surprise, he was there again, this time with photographers, working on a photo shoot. I still don’t know who he is and what he does, but took another series of shots, which I will put together in a slide show and post soon. For now, I’m using this shot of the Santa Monica Daredevil, with the ocean and today’s gorgeous sunset in background, as the 37th photo on my 365 project.
Weekly Photo Challenge: Scale
This week’s photo challenge asks us to play with scale to highlight size. In this photo taken in Sorrento, Italy, the contrast between the huge cruise liner and the two small boats around it caught my eye immediately.
And this next photo, also taken in Sorrento, illustrates how everything else is dwarfed by the always dauntingly present Mount Vesuvius…

They are every photographer’s nightmare (too tall to include in the shots, too many to be avoided). Their fronds are potentially dangerous (they can hurt people and animals, and damage cars when they fall). Some would like them gone forever, others want to keep and protect them. Love them or hate them, nothing is more L.A. than palm trees. I love them. They warm my heart…

The February full moon — also known as the “Snow Moon” — was shining alongside the planet Jupiter in the east-northeast sky tonight. I decided to photograph the event but got so caught up in getting the moon right, I forgot to get a decent shot of the two together! I only realized that some two hours later, as I uploaded my photos. I rushed outside to correct the mistake, only to find the sky covered by dense fog and no sign of the shining pair. But I hear they’ll shine together again on March 2, so I hope to catch them then…
