Weekly Photo Challenge: Foreshadow

Los Angeles is known for beautiful, sunny weather, and that’s indeed what we get here most of the time. But when moving from district to district in this huge metropolis, one must be ready for changes in temperature within just a few miles, and for other unexpected changes…

The day I shot these, we had spent time in the West Hollywood/Beverly Hills areas, where the weather was sunny and pleasant. Driving back to Santa Monica, as we moved closer to the ocean, we ran into increasingly low fog that foreshadowed the creepiest-looking night one could imagine.

Weekly Photo Challenge: The Sign Says

Signs can be funny, informative, deceiving, but some are plain eerie. Walking around the ocean front in Venice Beach, California, you’ll see these signs everywhere. Venice is at sea level and California is earthquake prone, so these signs are a constant reminder that a tsunami may happen any time…

Santa Monica Beach

Today was a beach day in Santa Monica. It was sunny with pleasantly warm temperature (70F or 21C), and although the sea was several degrees colder, people were swimming as if it were high summer. Coming from Northeastern Brazil, where the water temperature is much warmer, I chose to walk around and shoot some photos of the beach, the pier, and of the powerful “Arlington West Memorial,” a temporary memorial installed every Sunday on the beach, next to the pier. The crosses are set up at 6:00am on Sunday mornings – rain or shine – and taken down shortly before sunset. The memorial is a project of Veterans For Peace, and similar ones are installed in Santa Barbara and San Diego, CA.
