Leisure ~~

When I was 17 years old and spending a year in the US, I bought a poster with a lovely photograph of two birds sitting on a tree branch while some light snow fell gently around them. At the bottom of the poster it read: “What is life if, full of care, we have no time to sit and stare.” I took the poster back to Brazil and held on to it until I moved out of my parents’ home and came back to the US. But while the poster is long gone, those words have stuck with me through all these years. Every now and then I find myself thinking about them, especially as I realize how our busy lives often keep us from taking the time to enjoy the simple moments. When I saw this person sitting there staring at the horizon, I had to capture that moment. How refreshing! People still do take time to sit and stare! And I have decided to post this photograph along with the poem from which that phrase was borrowed, hoping to inspire those who see it to take some time to just stare…

Leisure

by W. H. Davies

What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs
And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,
Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,
Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,
And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can
Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare.

Two Readers ~~ I don’t know if they were related, or if they even knew each other. They could’ve been father and son… But what really caught my attention was the fact that both were reading books! Not iPads, not Kindles, not iPhones. Books! And were so absorbed in their reading that they didn’t even notice me or anything else going on around them. What’s not to love about these two?

Giant Fig Tree~~ Beverly Hills has some of the most incredible trees you’ll ever see. That’s why it’s been recognized as Tree City USA. This giant Fig Tree is one of its treasures. It towers in all directions, with massive arterial roots that grow down from its branches. Today I spent some time there and shot a few photos of that and other trees. Will write about it in my soon to be revived “Discovering LA” blog.

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: Churches or Religious Buildings
