The Real Thing~~

Today, against my better judgment, I went to see “Jurassic World,” the summer blockbuster that everybody’s been raving about. As far as dinosaur movies go, I had only seen the first of the three Jurassic Park movies. The original one, directed by Steven Spielberg and based on the novel “Jurassic Park,” by Michael Crichton, who also co-wrote the screenplay. That was a pretty darn good movie. A classic. This one is not. It is poorly written and horribly acted, with an excessive amount of special effects. So, to redeem myself for spending two hours of my day watching this ridiculous movie, I’ve decided to pay homage to real dinosaurs, the ones that actually roamed the world millions of years ago. Here are some shots taken at the Los Angeles Museum of Natural History.

Heartbreaking Discovery~~

Photographers must have a good eye, see things others might miss. Sometimes, when looking for that new take, a different angle, the photographer makes “discoveries,” catching something unexpected. Such “discoveries” may bring joy and pride. “Wow! look what I caught in this shot!” But they may be disturbing, heartbreaking.

When shooting a series of Rodin sculptures at LACMA, I was drawn to the hands of a particular piece. As I started to shoot them from different angles, I noticed something in one of the hands. It looked like a small pile of leaves, or dirt. But as I zoomed in… A heartbreaking image. A tiny little bird, resting in peace, at the palm of the sculpture’s hand. How did it get there? Was it put there by some silly prankster? Or did it choose to rest there, cradled in the hand sculpted by genius? What a disturbing, heartbreaking discovery…

Weekly Photo Challenge: Forces of Nature

For this week’s photo challenge, Forces of Nature, I’m sharing photos of my last snow storm in the Washington D.C. area before moving to Los Angeles. The snow was a force to be reckoned with! Left us without power for several days; roads were a mess; the Federal Government closed for a week, as did everything else. We had to go to a hotel for a few days to be safe. All this because the D.C. metro area is totally unprepared to handle snow. Just as Los Angeles can’t handle rain!! 🙂
