As I searched for photos for this week’s Travel Theme, “Symbol,” I came across this one, where the American flag (a national symbol) is embracing a palm tree (one of Los Angeles’ unofficial symbols). I thought this was, well, symbolic… 🙂

These photos were taken in Ojai, CA, a picturesque town, 83 miles from Los Angeles. The Ojai Valley is known for unique sunsets called “pink moments.” To capture those moments, instead of looking west at the setting sun, one should look east to see its reflection on the bluffs of the Topa Topa Mountains, which for a few moments are airbrushed a Day-Glo pink. Well, much to my disappointment, the weather turned bad when we were there, and the pink effect didn’t quite happen. Instead, ominous dark clouds covered the mountains, which I found extremely dramatic and absolutely awesome. Here are a couple of the photos taken that day.

This collection of short cactuses (or shall I say cacti?) are part of the Desert Garden of the Huntington Botanical Gardens, in San Marino (East LA), California. If you ever come to Southern California, and you like arts and botany, a stop at The Huntington is a must.
