Burgundy Region Chateaus (1)

Château Pommard~~

Located in Pommard, just outside Beaune, the Château de Pommard is the largest private vineyard in Bourgogne. Besides their grounds, museum and wine tasting, we saw two temporary art exhibits going on at the château (one of photography and one of sculptures) and a couple of permanent (I think) Salvador Dali sculptures displayed in their courtyard. The château’s grounds and museum are very pretty and the wine was very good. We regretted not having come earlier, with time for a full tour and meal. Here a slide show of photos of the road trip from Beaune to Pommard and of the château visit.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Off-Season – 365/Day 163

When people think about Los Angeles, they usually think of sunny days, blue skies, warm and pleasant weather all year long. What they don’t know is that May and June can be pretty gloomy in L.A. due to a phenomenon called “Marine Layer,” a dense mass of cool, moist air that accumulates over the surface of the ocean, causing that morning, and sometimes afternoon, fog that plagues many areas of Southern California. The phenomenon happens when the air close to the ground is colder, rather than warmer, while warm air above presses down on it, preventing it from dissipating. It usually starts in May (“May gray”), increases in June (the infamous “June gloom”), and sometimes sticks around in July (“no-sky July”). It’s a strange phenomenon that makes days look and feel like it’s winter or fall. Most of the time the sun comes out later in the day, but this week it has been losing the battle and it looks like winter around here, when it’s practically summer! That is definitely off-season, no? Here’s a taste of June gloom…

365/Day 160

Rainy Day~~

LA’s “June gloom” today came with rain, heat, humidity, and winds… We are used to the doom and gloom of June mornings in SoCal, but usually by noon the marine layer has given way to the sun and days can be spectacular. Not today… Very light rain came and went all day putting a damper on my photo plans. So I walked around the garden, that always looks good after some rain, and shot these images.

365/Day 153

One City, Two Rivers (late posting for June 2, Day 153 of Project 365)~~

I’ve been fighting some serious jet lag and trying to get back to some important matters I must attend to here in LA. In the meantime, I’m trying to catch up on my 365 project, interrupted by inefficient WiFi capabilities of some hotels in France. This post is for June 2, the day we traveled back to the US. Since I didn’t have a chance to take photographs then, I thought I’d pay homage to one my favorite spots on the trip:the city of Lyon. I love cities that have some body of water around them, be it a river, a lake or the ocean. Lyon has two rivers: the Rhône and the Saône. The Saône is a right tributary of the Rhône, rising at Vioménil in Vosges and joining the Rhône in Lyon, just south of the Presqu’île. Here are views of both rivers from the bridges we crossed many times.

Leaving Lyon to Paris (late posting for June 1 – Day 152 of 365 Project)~~

We left Lyon in the morning of June 1 and headed by train to Paris for a final half-day in the city. This post shows some of the countryside between Lyon and Paris and some of our afternoon meanderings in Paris. We went back to the Left Bank for a walk around the Jardin du Luxembourg and the Latin Quarter.

365/ Day 146

Traveling Through Burgundy  ~~

I had major problems uploading photos here in Beaune, France. Only managed to upload three (!) so far! The first was taken on the road to Beaune; the second was taken in Auxerre, where we stopped to visit the beautiful St. Etienne cathedral; and the third is the Cathedral itself. It’s a gorgeous gothic church and I took lots of photos inside it, but at an average of 30 minutes per upload, I just gave up…

365/Day 142

Day 1 in Paris ~~

It was a glorious, beautiful day today in Paris and we walked for hours. I took lots of photographs from various places and planned to post a nice gallery of the best shots but I had so much trouble with the Wifi in the hotel that I gave up. I’m just posting one shot, this one of the Seine with the Rive Gauche in the background. More tomorrow, maybe…
