365/Day 130

Honoring Chris Burden (4/11/1946 – 5/10/2015) ~~

If you’ve ever visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), you’ve seen “Urban Light,” Chris Burden’s installation in the form of a classical Greek temple composed of 202 antique cast-iron street lamps. This permanent installation has been at LACMA since 2008 and is now one of the symbols of Los Angeles. I fell in love with “Urban Light” the first time I set eyes on it. No matter which angle you look at it you’ll discover something new and beautiful, not only in the lamps themselves but in the way they are displayed. So, so pretty…

Today we woke up to news that Chris Burden had died. He was only 69 and would’ve had so much more to give to the art world had he not lost his battle with cancer. I am honoring him with some of the photos I’ve taken of his wonderful “Urban Light.”

365/Day 125

Riding El Camino Real~~

Today’s post is about the trip back home on a very overcast day, and the photos were taken from the car. Coming home from Santa Barbara this afternoon we drove through part of California’s historic El Camino Real (the Royal Road). This refers to the 600-mile (966-kilometer) California Mission Trail, connecting the former Alta California’s 21 missions, stretching from Mission San Diego de Alcalá in San Diego in the south to Mission San Francisco Solano in Sonoma in the north. The Camino Real today includes portions of U.S. Route 101, California State Route 1, California State Route 82 in the San Francisco Bay Area, and San Diego County Route S11. A nice reminder that you are in the Camino Real is that in its entire extent you’ll see distinctive bells, hung on supports in the form of a shepherd’s crook, also described as “a Franciscan walking stick.” As you can see, I’m a real sucker for these things… 🙂

365/Day 122

 In Santa Barbara ~~

Spending the weekend in beautiful Santa Barbara, the American Riviera. I love this place. We had a long day and tonight I had problems with slow internet connection at our hotel  so I’m posting my 365 project entry for May 2nd a bit late. Here are a few shots of downtown Santa Barbara. Hope to have more luck with connections tomorrow’s post…

365/Day 121

A Day in Hollywood~~

I went to Paramount Pictures Studios today, where the Paris Photo Los Angeles is taking place. This international art fair for photography and moving image is an annual event in Paris, at the Grand Palais, and also here in LA. Lots of beautiful stuff. Here is a taste of the event: location, people, exhibits.

365/Day 118

The “Purple Splendor” of Jacarandas! ~~

I absolutely love Jacarandas. They are stunning when they bloom, and Los Angeles is full of them. Some people, especially those who live around Jacarandas, cannot stand them. They complain the flowers make a mess on sidewalks, streets, yards and patios and are an actual hazard. I understand their frustration because our Rosewood is equally messy. It blooms in June/July and its tiny yellow flowers are impossible to deal with. But we manage. Anyway, since I love Jacarandas, I tried to catch them in Beverly Hills where some streets are lined up with hundreds of trees, making what they call a “purple splendor.” Unfortunately, most trees were flowerless. They’ve either fallen or have yet to bloom… I’ll continue to look for that “purple splendor” but, in the meantime, here is a taste of LA’s Jacarandas._DSC0442_edited-1

Travel Theme: Trees

Happy Arbor Day! It seems very fitting that Ailsa, at Where’s My Backpack, chose Trees as this week’s travel theme. Here are some of my favorite trees.

1. Lantern-adorned tree. Venice Canals, Venice Beach. Los Angeles, CA._DSC0299-1_edited-1

2. Giant Fig Tree. Almost 100 years old, its house is a park in Beverly Hills, CA.DSC_0433_edited-1

3. Umbrella Tree, Ravello, Italy._DSC0294_edited-1

4. Australian Tea Tree. One of my favorites at Palisades Park, Santa Monica, CA._DSC1207_edited-1
